First Impression

Initially, I am disappointed in the weather. Soon I discover that arriving in Vienna on a cloudy day does not obscure the beauty of this Central European metropolis. The architecture is beautiful and buildings are grand in scale. One of the first buildings I see is the State Opera House, which is the featured image for this post. Later in my trip, I attend the opera, and it is one of the most amazing cultural experiences of my life. Schoenbrunn Palace, pictured below, is full of beautiful art, antiques, and Austrian history.

Getting around

After some familiarization, I learn that the tram that runs along the Ringstrasse is both very convenient and cost effective. Public buses and trams are frequent, clean, and affordable. The central part of Vienna is very walk-able and close to public transportation stops. Like most of Europe, Vienna is full of cobblestone streets and pedestrian only areas. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as you tour the sights of Vienna.

Culture and Food

The people in Vienna are very friendly and English is spoken widely. Austria is very environmentally friendly and there are recycling receptacles in most locations and conservation is actively promoted. Wine and food are a huge part of the culture in Vienna. Dinner at a heurige, local wine hall, is a great experience and a must do when you visit. Delicious food and incredible wines are available in multiple locations but some of the best is at Feuerwehrwagner.

The region boasts some of the best pork dishes and potatoes that you will ever enjoy. The street of Vienna are full of street vendors and food stalls. The sausages are phenomenal! Additionally, Sacher Torte is a famous dessert and schnitzel is delicious.

Melk Monastery

A wonderful day trip from Vienna to the Wachau Valley includes Melk Monastery and the town of Deurnstein. Once in Durenstein, walking around the town and shopping for souvenirs is enjoyable. The area is famous for apricot production, apricot flavored sweets,  and liquors. The ruins of the ancient Deurnstein Castle above the town provide some incredible views of the Danube River. The Deurnstein Castle served as the prison for Richard The Lionheart.  Be forewarned, The climb from the town to the castle is vigorous and can be slippery during wet weather.

Winery

The Wachau Valley is home to some great wineries. Touring the facilities and dining at the Nikolaihof Winery https://www.nikolaihof.at/en/home/ is an excellent day trip from Vienna. The history of the vineyard and details of the wine making process is very interesting. The wines and beauty products produced by this winery are excellent. The dinner here is one of the best meals ever!!!

Wrapping it up

In conclusion, Vienna is a must see! The culture, history, and architecture of Vienna rival Paris in my opinion. After spending several days here, this region of Central Europe has something for everyone. I would love to hear your views if you have visited Vienna.
