Leaving Vegas

Visiting Las Vegas yearly for several consecutive years, we have become quite familiar with what to do in Vegas! As with most things, once you have done it a few times, we start trying to mix things up. On a previous trip, Karen visited the Grand Canyon with a small group tour. Karen’s exuberance and fond memories leads us to return as a couple.

Getting There

For our excursion to the Grand Canyon, we rent a car at the counter inside our hotel, The Venetian. Many car rental agencies advise against driving to the Grand Canyon due to rough roads, but the area of our visit has paved roads.

The route from Las Vegas is an easy drive with great stops along the way.

First Stop

The first notable landmark, Lake Mead, is only forty five minutes away. The views of the lake from the road are incredible. There are a few well marked observation areas where you can pull off the road, park you car, and take some beautiful pictures.

Next Stop

Our next stop is the Hoover Dam. Only a short drive from the Lake Mead scenic overlooks, Hoover Dam, is massive. This is such a cool spot to spend time walking around. Tours of the power plant are available, but our visit occurs too early in the day. The gift shop is open daily for Hoover Dam souvenirs, postcards, and gift ideas. We suggest that you plan to spend around thirty minutes here before departing for the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon

The one hour and forty five minute drive from Hoover Dam brings you to the majesty and beauty of the Grand Canyon. The landscape and scenery are amazing all along the drive. Karen coerced Corey into traversing the Sky Walk at Eagle Point. Having previously visited and knowing Corey’s fear of heights, Karen is too excited for us to experience this together. The ten foot wide horseshoe shaped glass walkway is more than four hundred feet above the bottom of the canyon. The Sky Walk extends more than seventy feet away from the the rim of the canyon. There are lockers provided inside as you cannot carry any loose items out onto the walk. you are also required to wear covers over your shoes. There are photographers on the walkway who pose you in multiple places and poses. You may purchase the photos and other souvenirs in the gift shop as you leave. The Sky Walk is a “must do” per Karen!

Eagle Point

The Hualapai Native American Tribe operates the Sky Walk which is located on tribal land. The Eagle Point area is beautiful and offers a grand view of the Colorado River. Be aware, there are no guard rails in the area and everything is in its natural state. The remnants of an old mine are also located on the premises. A Native American tee pee and living area are on display.  TIP; Upon arrival, you enter through a gift shop where tickets are purchased. Ticketing for Eagle Point, Sky Walk, or helicopter tours can be purchased here. Once you purchase tickets, buses transport you to the Eagle Point area, otherwise, there would not be enough parking . Additionally, there is a snack bar here for purchasing food and drinks.

The Return to Vegas

When visiting Las Vegas and looking to get away from all of the neon lights, head to the Grand Canyon, you will enjoy yourself. The two hour drive straight back to Las Vegas is well worth the trip.
