We have the opportunity to visit Malta as a stop during a Mediterranean cruise. This is a beautiful port to sail in to. We advise securing a prime spot on a top deck if you do not have a balcony. You will have beautiful views from both sides of the ship as you enter the port. While I am sure that you can hire a taxi or private tour, the primary way to explore is either horse drawn carriage or hop on hop off (Ho Ho) bus. As you enter the port, the choices will line up and wait for you and your fellow passengers.

Bus Chaos

Speaking of fellow passengers, this is one of the instances where cultural differences are shocking for us. Having spent some in Europe prior to stopping in Malta, we already know that some Europeans do not stand in line (que) as we do in the US. Despite our prior experiences, we are in for a surprise.

The extreme pushing and shoving as we were boarding the Ho Ho bus was insane! Our youngest child is violently pushed forward into the rear end of another passenger and then almost separated from us by the rude adults in an attempt to board. We are afraid she was going to be trampled.

Everyone wants to get to the attractions ahead of the crowd, which is a good idea. A better choice for us would have been taking our time on a horse drawn carriage. I’m sure that today you can grab an Lyft, Uber, or hire a private tour to avoid the insanity of boarding the bus.

Mdina

We suggest that you spend time walking around Mdina, the old city, viewing the beautiful architecture with its interesting features such as gargoyles, statues, and interesting door handles. The beauty and history in Malta are tremendous.

More To See In Malta

As you tour around Malta, you will see beautiful beach resorts with golden sand, magnificent churches, and homes. The fishing community is large and there is a great deal of agriculture. We found the food in Malta to be delicious and fresh, but somewhat expensive. Malta is an island, so while they do grow some produce, they are also required import a number of goods.

Malta Is Famous For Glass

There are two things that everyone must do while in Malta. First of all, you must tour a glass factory. We suggest that you save some room and weight in your carry on luggage so that you can purchase some beautiful blown glass. Malta is famous for the blown glass creations and they have everything from the whimsical to the elegant.

Maltese Cross

The second must buy is a Maltese Cross. Used as a symbol by fire rescue departments all over the world, The Maltese Cross is originally from Malta. You can find the Maltese Cross on everything from t-shirts to diamond jewelry.
