Our visit to Rome was during a port stop during a Mediterranean cruise. Karen’s extensive research and planning prior to the cruise proved invaluable. The cruise port is not close to the city. For us, selecting a local tour company is important! Miles and Miles Tour Co. met us at the port. The ride to Rome in a Mercedes van while being educated on the history and culture of Italy in general and more specifically, Rome, is an interesting start to the excursion.
Touring
For the most part, we are able to drive up the attractions, skip the lines and walk in after a very short wait. By using Miles and Miles, we are able to utilize skip the line privileges and enjoy an opportunity to experience much more than we would have on our own. Our first stop in Rome includes complimentary cappuccino. This is by far the best coffee drink that we have ever had. Our next stop affords us an overlook of the city.
While driving from attraction to attraction, you are overwhelmed by the volume of ruins, statues, and historic sites.
Sites of Rome
The stop at Piazza Navona is full of life as there are lots of shops and restaurants. At each stop during the tour, our guide, Francesco, provides our small group with lots of historical data and details for the specific site. The stops at Circus Maximus and Palentine Hill are full of information about the history of Rome. We are able to spend more time at the Pantheon and take pictures inside.
Due to it’s location, our van does not get close to the Trevi Fountain, so that is one attraction that we had to walk to. The walk is not too far and the fountain is beautiful. Usually, there are a lot of people at here, so it is a little difficult to get great photos.
At The Coliseum, we receive a detailed explanation of the history and myths of gladiators and the events that took place inside. The lines to enter the Coliseum are extremely long and it is very hot during the middle of the day. Our guide advises us against paying for entry due to the lack of additional information and crowds. It is quite an impressive structure and we were in awe while viewing it from an adjacent hill and driving around it.
Another famous site that we view from afar is The Spanish Steps. While the Trevi Fountain is crowded, the mass of people at the Spanish Steps is insane. As we drive by, noticing the crowd, we take a picture from the car…
Vatican & Vatican City
Our most impressive stop is The Vatican, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and Vatican City. Two suggestions, Be sure to book a tour that includes the skip the line tickets, and also buy stamps in the Vatican post office. You can also take a picture with a foot in two different countries, Vatican City and Italy. The Vatican, the history and art are amazing! The Vatican is something that you have to experience. While pictures are beautiful, the do not compare to seeing it in person.
To wrap up, while things in Rome are expensive and we learned that it is an expensive airport to fly to, it is a MUST do!!! When you have an opportunity, visit Rome.
